MarketingOps.com's 2025 State of the Marketing Ops Professional research puts a number on the gap: 92% of marketing ops professionals expect AI to significantly impact their roles, but 59% of teams lack AI and automation expertise. Enthusiasm has outpaced clarity, and most organizations are deploying AI without a framework for deciding where it fits and where it doesn't.

That missing framework creates two failure modes. Over-automation puts AI in charge of tasks that require human judgment, leading to off-brand output, compliance risk, or the kind of generic content that performs worse than what the team was producing before. Under-automation leaves efficiency on the table because teams are nervous about getting it wrong. Both cost real money, and both are avoidable with a clearer way to match AI capability to task type.

Why marketing teams struggle to separate AI assistance from automation

The confusion isn't surprising when you consider how AI tools are marketed. Most vendors describe their capabilities in terms of what the AI can do rather than what it should do. The pitch deck shows time savings. The case study shows before-and-after metrics. Not every AI-generated asset needs the same level of review, and treating them all the same creates bottlenecks that defeat the purpose of using AI in the first place.
